This was the first Christmas in a while that I did not get a book as a present. Which was a good thing in some ways because I have a stack of books in my bedside table waiting to be read. I just finished a book last night that I found really hard to get into at first but the ending just made me absolutely love the entire book. I found it to be really wordy and it had tons of words that I had no idea what they meant but if you could get past that it was really good. The book was We Need to Talk About Kevin.
The book was basically a series of letters that a wife is writing to her husband about her son that shoots a bunch of students at his school. I found the whole psychology thing behind what was wrong with him and possibly why he did it to be very interesting. The ending had me crying for a good half an hour.
I just bought a new book by one of my absolute favorite authors Wally Lamb called The Hour I First Believed which also has references to the Columbine school shootings (I find the subject to be fascinating). I didn't even read the description of the book before I bought it because I have devoured all of Lamb's other books. I had no idea that he even came out with a new book. So I am starting this book tonight!
I was reading my neighborhood's posts today and came across one by felt in which she lists her top 10 books and I was like what a great idea! So let me share my top ten books. Of course I could have made this list longer but I figured I should keep it to just ten like she did. Thanks for the idea felt!
1. American Psycho - Bret Easton Ellis
2. She's Come Undone - Wally Lamb
3. The Metamorphosis- Franz Kafka
4. I Know This Much Is True- Wally Lamb
5. The Ravishing of Lol Stein- Marguerite Duras
6. Glamorama- Bret Easton Ellis
7. The Rules of Attraction- Bret Easton Ellis
8. A Clockwork Orange- Anthony Burgess
9. Brave New World- Aldous Huxley
10. 1984- George Orwell
If you want to, share your top ten too in your own post or in a comment! I'd love to see other people's lists.
I love buying new books for some reason. I love collecting them and looking at all of them on my shelf. Today I went to Barnes and Noble and bought two new books:
Right now I'm currently reading the following books:
The book on Hoover is a little dry but it has some interesting parts in it. I have to read it for my Sociology of Deviance class. It is such a long book! I don't know if I am going to finish it in time to write my paper. I never realized how powerful and how much like the Gestapo Hoover made the FBI act.
The Stranger on the other hand is much easier to read. I'm already halfway through it and I've only been reading it for like an hour. The book starts with the death of the main character's mother. It was amazing how indifferent he was to the passing of his mother. But so far the book is pretty decent, but I think I've read it in high school. It's weird because it sounds so familiar yet I can't remember actually ever reading it. Is this the first sign of Alzheimers? I hope not!
I just finished the book "A Scanner Darkly" by Phillip K. Dick the other day. If you haven't read the book or seen the movie with Keanu Reeves I'm going to quickly describe it. Basically, it is set in the future where there is a really addictive organic drug (like heroin) called Substance D. An undercover agent is sent into the drug world to see who the big suppliers are but in order for him to fit in he has to take massive doses of Substance D which causes him to become addicted. What ends up happening is that the undercover agent has to end up narcing on himself. This is because he doesn't realize that he is the person that he is observing on these video surveillance tapes because the Substance D has deteriorated his mind into two separate identities, one is the narc and the other one is the drug addicted person that he is narcing on. The book investigates the reciprocal relationship that criminals and law enforcement people have. It was a very interesting book, if not a little weird. I had to read it for the class I am taking this summer called the Sociology of Deviance. I'll probably end up posting the paper that I am going to write on the book that I have to do for an assignment for the class.
today so far has been majorly boring. i had to wake up at 7am to babysit for an hour. then i came home, worked out, took a shower, started my laundry, read and finished "Time Bandit," and then took a nap. and then i had nothing to do for the rest of the day. i was so bored! eventually me and my brother decided to go to barnes and noble where i picked up the following books:
Show us what's on your mind.
"What is Kafka's view of criminality in modern life? With these thoughts in mind, what is Joseph K. (the main character) guilty of? You might have to do some outside research on Kafka." Umm yea that's just great seeing as this book is kind of hard to understand especially at the speed I have been reading it at just to get the book finished in a week so that I have more than just a couple of days to write the paper while doing some outside research on Kafka. It shouldn't be too bad but I am still stressing.
I have been so lazy these last few days ever since my last day of school. I honestly feel like I have spent the majority of each day in bed. Yet, I did do something, I finished two books in th ree days which I was proud of my self for.
Here are the new ones I have read:
So yea I guess I am going to go back into my bed now and watch the yankee game...hopefully the yankees will finally be able to win a game .::fingers crossed::.
